Park Overview
Nationalpark Donau Auen spans approximately 9,600 hectares of pristine floodplain between Vienna and Bratislava. Established in 1996, it preserves one of the last intact riverine landscapes in Europe, showcasing dynamic waterways, oxbow lakes and permanent wetlands.
History & Conservation
Originally threatened by river regulation and urban development, the park's protection has been a milestone in Austrian conservation. Today, dedicated efforts by park rangers and volunteers ensure the sustainable management of habitats and species.

The park is home to over 1,000 plant species and more than 600 animal species, including Eurasian otters, white-tailed eagles and a variety of amphibians. Its riparian forests, floodplain meadows and gravel banks provide critical breeding grounds and migration corridors.
